A few tips and regulatory reminders for autumn!
Published on 09 Oct 2024
Autumn is well and truly here, and to help you prepare for the winter season, we invite you to take a look at the following topics of interest.
Temporary car shelters
Temporary car shelters are prohibited in our city. The same applies to any other structures with canvas coverings or made of other materials used to protect against winter weather, such as smoking shelters.
Gas-fuelled leaf blowers
The use of gas-fuelled leaf blowers on city territory is prohibited. Only electric leaf blowers are permitted. However, their use is prohibited every day between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., as well as all day Sunday.
Green waste collections
Several collections of green waste are offered in the fall. To find out all the dates, consult the waste collection calendar.
Green waste consists mainly of grass clippings, dead leaves, hedge trimmings, plant and flower waste.
Green waste for collection must be placed on edge of the sidewalk in approved containers:
- a regular garbage bin, equipped with handles and an airtight lid and having a maximum capacity of 100 litres;
- a biodegradable disposable paper bag, with a maximum capacity of 150 litres;
- a grey, black or green wheeled bin with European grip equipped with lid, maximum capacity of 360 litres.
Branches must be less than 5 cm in diameter, no more than 1 m long and bundled with string no more than 40 cm in diameter.
Organic waste collection: winter schedule
As of Wednesday, November 6, organic waste will be collected every two weeks until next spring. This change concerns all apartment buildings with 8 units or fewer and single-family homes. Therefore, on Wednesday, November 6, organic waste collection will take place in sector 2, and then on November 13 in sector 1, and so on, alternately until next spring. To know more, consult the waste collection calendar.
Tree pruning and cutting
Autumn is the ideal time to prune or fell trees.
No permit is required to prune a tree, but to minimize the risk of damage, we recommend that you call in a professional. Also, make sure that the tree in question is a private tree and not a public one. The maintenance or felling of public trees (on City property or in the street right-of-way) is carried out ONLY by the City.
To cut down trees, you must obtain a permit from the Urban Planning, Permits and Inspection department. The latter will check that the felling is justified for a valid reason. In most cases, the felled tree will have to be replaced. To find out more, consult the Trees section.
Overnight street parking
From December 1 until March 31, overnight street parking is prohibited between midnight and 5:30 a.m. whenever a snow removal alert is in effect (or when signage prohibits it). There are several ways to stay informed about snow removal alerts. Visit the Snow removal section for full details.
We hope you find these tips useful, and wish you a pleasant autumn!
